The Hidden Language of Northern Art: Could Geometry Have Functioned as a Form of Writing?
One of the most intriguing possibilities raised by the art of ancient northern Europe and Eurasia is that some objects we classify today as merely “decorative” may once have communicated information. The intricate spirals of Celtic metalwork, Scandinavian bracteates, Anglo-Saxon jewelry, Irish interlace, Pictish stones, Viking carvings, and the geometric marks encountered farther east along the northern Silk Road invite a provocative question: could some ancient peoples have learned to “read” subtle differences in geometry in much the same way that a knowledgeable observer can read the concealed markings on a deck of trick playing cards?
This should presently be regarded as a hypothesis rather than an established archaeological conclusion. In this essay, we call this the The Nordic EurAsian Pattern-Language Hypothesis. Yet several well-established facts make the question worth asking.
A Northern World Connected by Language
The idea should first be placed within the extraordinary linguistic and cultural network of northern Europe during the first millennium AD.
By the Viking Age, people throughout Scandinavia spoke closely related varieties conventionally grouped under Old Norse. Norse-speaking travelers carried their language westward into Britain, Ireland, Iceland and Greenland and eastward through the Baltic and river systems leading into what became the lands of Rus’. Viking runic inscriptions have consequently been found extraordinarily far from Scandinavia—including England, Russia, Greece, Turkey and Greenland.
England requires an important qualification. Old English and Old Norse were separate Germanic languages, although sufficiently closely related that scholars have seriously investigated the extent to which their speakers could understand one another. Matthew Townend’s major study of Anglo-Norse linguistic contact specifically examines this question of mutual intelligibility.
Thus, rather than saying that exactly the same language could simply be understood from England to Kyiv, it is more historically defensible to envision a continuum of overlapping languages, dialects, trade contacts and multilingual communities, within which Old Norse itself traveled enormous distances.
That environment provides an interesting setting for another kind of communication—one based less upon spoken language than upon recognizable visual forms.
When a Pattern Becomes Information
Consider the principle behind a marked deck of playing cards.
To an ordinary observer, every card has precisely the same ornamental back. To the person who understands the system, however, they are not identical at all. A tiny alteration in a curl might indicate suit. The position of a leaf might indicate number. A slightly enlarged space might identify a face card.
Nothing needs to resemble a conventional letter.
The important thing is difference.
Suppose an ancient craftsman similarly constructed an ornament from repeated geometric elements. Ten concentric circles might initially appear identical. Yet one circle could contain 12 divisions and another 13. One sequence might contain three closely spaced dots followed by a larger interval. A spiral could turn clockwise rather than counterclockwise. A knot could cross over rather than under. An animal’s head could face inward rather than outward.
To an outsider these would be artistic variations.
To someone trained to recognize them, they could theoretically be information.
This possibility becomes particularly interesting because Scandinavians unquestionably possessed conventional symbolic writing. Runes appeared during the first centuries AD; the Elder Futhark contained 24 characters, while Viking-Age Younger Futhark reduced the system to only 16. Some individual signs therefore represented multiple sounds. Runes were placed not merely on monumental stones but on weapons, jewelry, combs, tools, wood and other personal objects.
Some inscriptions were even deliberately inconspicuous. Sweden’s Historical Museum notes examples of runic inscriptions apparently intended as private or concealed messages, including writing positioned toward the wearer’s body rather than outward toward an observer.
That is significant. It demonstrates that northern Europeans were perfectly comfortable with the concept that an object could contain information not intended to be immediately apparent to everyone looking at it.
Symbols That We Still Cannot Read
An even more intriguing comparison comes from Pictish Britain.
Early medieval Scotland contains more than 250 stones bearing what archaeologists call Pictish symbols. Scholars recognize a repertoire of roughly three dozen designs. Some resemble animals or recognizable objects; others are abstract geometric forms. Their precise meaning remains unresolved.
That fact deserves emphasis.
We already possess an ancient northern European visual-symbol system whose surviving signs are recognizable and repetitive but whose complete semantic system remains unknown.
Whether those symbols constitute “writing” depends upon how writing is defined. They might represent names, families, ranks, religious concepts, political affiliations, narratives or something quite different. But their existence demonstrates that meaningful graphic communication need not look like an alphabet.
Farther east, another parallel appears.
Among Turkic peoples of Central Eurasia, tamgas served as recognizable geometric signs associated with clans, dynasties, political groupings and social identity. Archaeologists have classified recurring tamga families from southern Siberia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Semirechye and have used their geographic distribution to investigate political relationships and migration.
Tamgas therefore demonstrate something important for the hypothesis: simple geometric figures could carry socially intelligible information across large geographical regions without functioning like an ordinary alphabet.
Perhaps “Writing” Is the Wrong Word
The most interesting possibility may consequently lie somewhere between writing and art.
Modern people tend to divide communication into categories: this is writing, this is a picture, this is decoration, this is a number, and this is a symbol.
Ancient people were not necessarily obligated to make those distinctions.
A geometric figure could simultaneously identify a family, invoke a deity, signify ownership, communicate status and contribute aesthetically to an object. Viking-Age geometric religious symbols themselves could acquire different meanings according to their material and social contexts.
A modern analogy might therefore be sign language rather than alphabetic writing.
The image itself carries a concept.
☀ might signify sun.
A particular animal might signify a lineage.
Three concentric rings might represent a place, rank or cosmological level.
A clockwise spiral might represent one condition and a counterclockwise spiral another.
Two nearly identical knots might communicate different ideas because one strand crosses differently.
Combine several such signs and an initiated observer could theoretically receive a surprisingly sophisticated message without encountering anything resembling a written sentence.
The Possibility of a Visual Literacy
This leads to an even more speculative but fascinating possibility: perhaps certain people were trained from childhood to perceive differences in ornament that modern observers routinely overlook.
That does not require assuming that northern Europeans possessed biologically superior eyesight or a special racial visual ability; there is no established evidence for such a population-wide trait. Culture and training alone can dramatically alter visual attention.
A child taught to read sees letters where an illiterate observer sees marks. A musician reads a score where another person sees dots. An experienced tracker sees information in footprints. A sailor reads clouds and waves. And someone familiar with a cleverly marked deck instantly recognizes differences that another observer could examine for hours without detecting.
Ancient northern craftspeople may similarly have possessed a highly developed visual literacy.
Color could have increased this vocabulary enormously. Modern archaeological objects have frequently lost pigments, organic materials, polished surfaces, contrasting metals and other visual characteristics that they originally possessed. Consequently, what survives today as a monochromatic carved pattern might not reproduce everything an ancient observer actually saw.
Shape, orientation, color, material, position and repetition could potentially operate together.
Imagine that the informational unit were not simply:

Such a system could contain far more information than the isolated triangle suggests.
Jewelry as a Carrier of Meaning
Jewelry would be particularly suited to this kind of communication.
A pendant travels with its owner. A brooch can identify a person’s affiliations. A sword fitting can accompany generations of a family. A ring can communicate status without its wearer saying anything.
And runic evidence confirms that personal objects really did carry writing. Early inscriptions occur on brooches, weapons, coins and implements and frequently contain an owner’s or maker’s name.
Consequently, the conceptual distance between an inscribed brooch and a symbolically encoded brooch is not enormous.
The unanswered question is whether the decorative geometry itself ever constituted an additional communicative layer.
Stories Concealed Within Ornament
The possibility becomes even more compelling when considering narrative art.
Northern European artists frequently transformed animals into geometry. Bodies stretch into ribbons. Legs become knots. Serpents become borders. Heads terminate lines. Separate creatures interlock until the viewer must mentally disentangle them.

Someone familiar with a particular mythology might therefore perceive considerably more than ornament.
A stranger sees:
knot — animal — spiral — animal — knot.
An initiated viewer might conceivably recognize:
hero — journey — serpent — transformation — return.
This would not necessarily constitute writing in the phonetic sense. It could instead resemble a combination of mnemonic notation, heraldry, religious iconography and visual storytelling.
The artifact might not contain every word of a story. Instead, its images could provide prompts enabling someone who already knew the oral tradition to reconstruct it.
That possibility fits particularly well with societies in which extensive narratives were transmitted orally.
From Ireland to the Silk Road
This hypothesis becomes especially interesting when considered geographically.
The maritime routes of Scandinavia connected Ireland, Britain, the Baltic and northern Europe, while Scandinavian travelers moving eastward entered the great river systems leading toward Rus’, Byzantium and the broader Eurasian trading world. At the other end of this cultural landscape, Eurasian peoples employed tamgas and other compact geometric identifiers. Scandinavian travelers carried runes astonishingly far from their homeland.
This does not establish the existence of a single Celtic-Norse-Silk Road symbolic language.
But it creates a historically plausible environment for visual conventions to travel alongside goods, people and stories.
Symbols have one enormous advantage in multilingual environments: they do not necessarily require pronunciation.
A merchant who cannot speak another merchant’s language can recognize a mark.
A warrior can recognize an emblem.
A pilgrim can recognize a religious symbol.
A traveler can recognize a sign associated with a ruler, clan or trading organization.
In that limited sense, visual symbolism can behave like a primitive international sign language.
How We Could Test the Hypothesis
The marked-card analogy suggests an unusually powerful way of investigating this.
Instead of initially asking:
“What does this ancient pattern mean?”
we should first ask:
“Are these patterns actually identical?”
Modern computer vision makes this test possible in ways unavailable to earlier generations of archaeologists.
Take hundreds of high-resolution photographs of Celtic, Scandinavian, Anglo-Saxon, Irish, Pictish and Eurasian artifacts. Digitally isolate their repeated patterns. Straighten circular inscriptions into linear sequences. Measure angles, spacing, dots, line lengths, crossings, orientation and symmetry.
Then search statistically for controlled irregularities.
If deviations occur randomly, they are probably craftsmanship, damage or decoration.
But suppose the same apparently insignificant alteration appears repeatedly on unrelated objects.
Suppose five dots are consistently followed by a reversed spiral.
Suppose particular geometric arrangements repeatedly accompany known runic names.
Suppose certain patterns correlate with particular regions, families, burials, social ranks or mythological scenes.
And suppose the same sequences occur too frequently to be explained by chance.
At that point we would no longer merely be seeing shapes in ancient decoration. We would have evidence of syntax.
And syntax is where decoration begins approaching language.
The Art We May Have Forgotten How to Read
None of this proves that Celtic, Norse, English, Irish or northern Eurasian peoples possessed a lost universal geometric writing system. The known evidence does not presently justify that conclusion.
But the underlying possibility deserves more serious consideration than it might initially receive.
We know that Scandinavians encoded language in angular runes. We know that runes could appear inconspicuously on personal objects. We know that Pictish Britain possessed a recurring symbolic vocabulary whose meaning remains uncertain. We know that Eurasian peoples employed geometric tamgas to communicate identity and status. And we know that northern European artists constructed extraordinarily sophisticated visual compositions in which animals, lines, knots and symbols merge together.
Perhaps, therefore, some ancient ornament was meant not simply to be looked at, but to be recognized.
The marked playing card provides a remarkably useful analogy. Fifty-two card backs can appear identical until somebody teaches you where to look. After learning the system, the difference becomes obvious and the apparently decorative pattern becomes information.
Perhaps certain ancient artifacts present us with a similar problem.
For more than a thousand years we may have preserved the cards while losing the instructions for reading their marks.
And if such a system ever existed, the breakthrough may not come from staring harder at individual symbols and trying to make them resemble modern letters. It may come from comparing thousands of artifacts and discovering that their supposedly decorative imperfections are not imperfections at all.
They may be the surviving grammar of a visual language whose readers disappeared centuries ago.
