Lake fly larvae plunge greater than 200 meters into Lake Malawi every day to cover from predators, utilizing tiny air sacs to manage their depth. A rubber-like materials referred to as resilin lets them develop or shrink the sacs by altering their pH. Their toughness challenges a well-liked clarification for why bugs are absent from the open ocean.
